Recommended Image Sizes

Choosing the right image size ensures your site looks professional without slowing down performance. Your Frame site automatically generates multiple image sizes for different devices, but starting with properly sized images is essential.

General Image Guidelines

  • Background Images: 1920 × 1080

  • Hero Images: 2880 × 1500

  • Fullscreen Slideshows: 2800 × 1500

  • Gallery Images: 1500 px wide (auto height)

Content & Layout Images

  • Header Banner Images: 1048 × 250

  • Blog Post Images: 1200 × 630

  • Landscape Featured Images: 1200 × 900

  • Portrait Featured Images: 900 × 1200

  • Thumbnail Images: 150 × 150

Branding Images

  • Logo Images: 200 × 100
    (SVG recommended when possible)

The Perfect Featured Image Size

One of the most common WordPress questions is:
“What size image should I use for my featured images?”

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Different themes use different layout widths, and social media platforms all prefer different image dimensions. Because of this, the ideal featured image size may vary depending on your site’s design and how content is shared.

Suggested Featured Image Sizes

  • 1920 × 1080 – Works well for most modern themes and social sharing, though some cropping may occur

  • 1200 × 630 – Ideal for many classic themes and Facebook sharing

Design Tip

Keep the main subject of your image centered, with extra space around the edges. Most platforms crop from the sides, and centered content helps prevent important details from being cut off.

Image File Formats

Use the correct image format to balance quality and performance:

  • JPG / JPEG – Best for photographs

  • PNG – Best for transparency or graphics with text

  • SVG – Best for logos and icons

  • WebP – Best overall balance of quality and performance

WebP Image Support

As of July 2021, WordPress includes built-in WebP support, allowing you to upload WebP images directly and use them just like JPG or PNG files.

Why Use WebP?

  • Smaller file sizes than JPG or PNG

  • Faster page load times

  • Better mobile performance

  • Supported by modern browsers

  • Compatible with WordPress responsive images

Recommended WebP Settings

  • Quality: 70–80%

  • Maximum width: 1920 px

  • File size goal:

    • Under 300 KB for most images

    • Under 500 KB for large hero images

Image Compression Techniques

Compressing images reduces file size and improves performance.

Lossless Compression

  • Reduces file size without changing image quality

  • Best for logos, icons, and text-heavy images

Lossy Compression

  • Achieves larger file size reductions

  • Minor quality loss may occur (often unnoticeable)

  • Best for photos and background images

Image Compression Tools (Recommended)

To compress images before uploading them to your Frame site, we recommend using an online image converter or compression tool. These tools help reduce file size while maintaining good visual quality.

A reliable option is Convertio, a free web-based tool that allows you to compress and convert images (including WebP) without creating an account.

👉 Use Convertio to compress images:

How to use it:

  1. Upload your image

  2. Choose a compression format (WebP recommended)

  3. Press the convert button

  4. Download the optimized image

  5. Upload it to your WordPress site

Best Practices for Image Optimization

  • Resize images before uploading

  • Avoid uploading full-resolution camera or phone images

  • Use WebP whenever possible

  • Keep file sizes as small as possible without sacrificing clarity

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Uploading oversized images and resizing them in the editor

  • Using PNGs for photos instead of JPG or WebP

  • Stretching small images to fit large sections

  • Inconsistent featured image sizes across posts
