Site Management
Switching themes may affect your site's appearance and customizations. Here's what to know before making the change.
Updated 2 weeks ago
On the Frame platform, each WordPress theme is built with its own templates, styles, and layout structure. Any customizations you make to Templates or template parts (like Header and Footer patterns) are saved only within that specific theme in use at the time. These customizations do not carry over when switching to a different theme — but they are retained and will reappear if you return to the original theme.
This means:
Switching to a different theme may result in your customizations not appearing.
Template and template part modifications (e.g., header/footer) made via the Site Editor are theme-specific and won't transfer between themes.
However, if you switch back to the original theme, your prior changes to the Templates and parts will be restored.
For most users, switching themes is seamless — your pages, media, menus, and general content structure will continue to function normally.
However, there are important exceptions:
Header and Footer Template Parts: If you've modified these (e.g., added your own blocks or changed layout), those customizations are tied to the active theme. Switching themes will revert to that theme's default header/footer, though your previous edits will return if you switch back.
Template Modifications: Customizing templates (such as single post/page layouts) within the Site Editor is always bound to the specific theme. Edits won't carry over across themes.
⚠️ Note: We highly discourage direct Template modifications. Overriding a Template opts you out of future updates and improvements we push to that template. This can cause display issues or incompatibility down the line as the platform evolves.
Whenever possible, use built-in blocks, patterns, or custom fields rather than editing templates directly.
Theme Patterns: (those that come built into the theme) cannot be overridden. You'll see a lock icon on these in the Editor.
User-Added Patterns: Are not tied to any specific theme and will carry over across themes.
User-Defined Template Parts: (e.g., a custom sidebar or banner region) do not carry over and are stored within the theme they were created under.
Some exceptions exist. For example, certain block settings (like the Site Logo block) may carry over depending on how they're configured (if it was default and not modified) — but if there were modifications, this is not guaranteed or universal.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Take note of any layout changes you've made using the Site Editor.
Remember: Template and template part customizations won't follow you to the new theme.
If you've customized Headers, Footers, or Templates, test your site thoroughly after switching themes.
